Chairperson's Message

Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about Crime Stoppers. The Waterloo Regional Crime Stoppers program was founded in 1987, eleven years after the very first program was formed in Albuquerque New Mexico. Since then, Crime Stoppers has grown to become an international Crime fighting organization operating in over twenty countries around the world. All of these programs share a common mandate, to work together with the community to solve crime and above all to protect the anonymity of our tipster. In Canada, the anonymity of people who provide us with information is protected by case law. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled unanimously that information obtained by Crime Stoppers does not have to be disclosed in court. (R v. Leipert [1997] 1 S.C.R. 281) The anonymity of our tipsters is paramount in the delivery of our program.

The guarantee of anonymity gives community members the confidence and courage to come forward and do the right thing. Not only does the reporting of illegal activity reduce crime in your community, it can lead to a cash reward for the person providing information. Crime Stoppers is serious about solving crime; if you have information about a crime contact us one of three ways: Call, Click or Text. All three methods are secure & anonymous.

Crime Stoppers receives no government funding. All the monies used to operate the Crime Stoppers program are obtained through charitable community donations, this includes the money paid out to our tipsters! Money is often donated by local businesses, corporations, clubs, professional associations, retailers and individuals. Crime Stoppers relies on the generosity of community partners and concerned citizens to keep our program functioning. All charitable donations to Crime Stoppers are tax deductible. In addition to donations Crime Stoppers relies on funds obtained through a variety of fundraising events organized by our dedicated volunteer Board of Directors. These directors along with our coordinator, are responsible for the day to day operations of the Waterloo Region Crime Stoppers program. From the person who makes the call to the person who reviews the information, Crime Stoppers would cease to exist without caring community members. Please support your local Crime Stoppers through a financial donation or by becoming a Friend of Crime Stoppers & volunteering your time. Together we can make a difference in our community.
